For the first time here at El Blog de De la Vega I am interviewing an international personality. Please let me introduce you no other than Peter Bagge, one of my favorite comic-book authors.

- What part of Buddy Bradley is you and what part is made up?
- I'm just like Buddy except for the obvious: I'm a cartoonist, he owns a junk shop, he has a son, I have a daughter, etc.
- Do you think the success of your “Hate” series of comic-books was helped by the boom of Nirvana and other Seattle-based rock bands? In the part of the story when Stinky makes his own band and Buddy becomes a manager you seem to be a bit bitter about the music business.
- I wasn't bitter about the music biz, since I wasn't in it at all at the time. I was certainly cynical about it, but mostly I was just trying to be funny.
- In the “Hate” series there’s a character who’s a kind of a conspiracy theory nerd. Are you one of them or did you get inspiration from any real person who is like that.
- Do you mean George? Either way, no, I wouldn't call myself a conspiracy nut. I don't rule them out either, but I don't buy into anything without proof.
- Also on your “Apocalypse Nerd” comic-book you talk about the end of the world. Do you think an atomic war will end up with our civilization or maybe that the way we are treating Mother Earth will make us pay back in some way?
- I'm not as worried about the environment as most people seem to be. Not that I'm not worried AT ALL, but I don't buy into all this gloom and doom stuff, which sounds more like a RELIGIOUS, moral stance more than a scientific one. I also don't think a nuke attack would be the end of civilization, though it would certainly change it for the worse for a long time.
- Since normally you do both your stories and your drawing, how was working with Gilbert Hernández on the “Yeah” series of comic-books?
- Working with Gilbert was fine. He's a great guy and a great artist! If I could always collaborate with someone of his talent I'd do it more often.
- You have worked for all the most important comic-book companies in the States: Fantagraphics, DC, Marvel, Dark Horse… What is the difference of working for each one of them? Which one do you prefer?
- Indy comic publishers give you more creative freedom. Corporate companies pay better, and on time. It's a toss up as to which is better.

- Soy como Buddy excepto por lo obvio: yo soy un dibujante de cómics, él es el dueño de una tienda de cosas de segunda mano; él tiene un hijo, yo tengo una hija, etc.
- ¿Crees que el éxito de tu serie de cómics “Odio” se debió en parte al éxito de Nirvana y otras bandas de rock ubicadas en Seattle? En la parte de la historia en la que Apestoso forma su propia banda y Buddy se convierte en su representante pareces estar un poco resentido con el negocio de la música.
- No estaba resentido con el negocio de la música, porque en aquel momento yo no estaba en él. Sí era cínico sobre él, pero sobre todo de lo que estaba tratando era de ser gracioso.

- ¿Te refieres a George? En cualquier caso, no, no me llamaría a mí mismo un loco de la conspiración. Tampoco es que esté en contra de ella; es sólo que no me creo cualquier cosa sin pruebas.
- También en tu cómic “Apocalypse Nerd” hablas sobre el final del mundo. ¿Crees que una guerra atómica va a acabar con nuestra civilización o tal vez que tal como estamos tratando a la Madre Tierra ella nos lo va a hacer pagar de algún modo?
- No estoy tan preocupado sobre el medio ambiente como parece estar la mayoría de la gente. No es que no esté preocupado EN ABSOLUTO, pero no me creo toda esta patraña de tanto pesimismo y negatividad, que suena más como un posicionamiento RELIGIOSO y moral, más que uno científico. Tampoco creo que un ataque nuclear fuera a ser el fin de la civilización, aunque ciertamente sí la cambiaría a peor por mucho tiempo.
- Teniendo en cuenta que normalmente tú haces tanto los guiones como los dibujos, ¿cómo fue trabajar con Gilbert Hernández en la serie de cómics “Yeah”?
- Trabajar con Gilbert fue muy bien. ¡Es un tipo genial y un gran artista! Si siempre pudiera colaborar con alguien de su talento, lo haría más a menudo.
- Has trabajado para las compañías de cómics más importantes de Estados Unidos: Fantagraphics, DC, Marvel, Dark Horse… ¿Cuál es la diferencia entre trabajar en una o en otra? ¿Cuál prefieres?
- Las editoriales de cómic indies te dan más libertad creativa. Las corporativas pagan mejor y a tiempo. Es una lotería cuál es mejor.
